Read the experience of our volunteer Bruno during his stay on a vegan-organic and sustainable permaculture farm in Sornetan!
I had a very uplifting weekend in Sornetan, and thus for several reasons.
As a volunteer, I was given a fantastic opportunity to be introduced to a vegan and sustainable farm through explanation about its running and by assisting in the carrying out of several tasks such as building fences and clearing up grass for land maintenance. Spending time with the family while working, cooking, chatting or playing boardgame was also very valuable because it contributed to the forging of a favourable feeling towards their lifestyle, which is to some extend different from mine.
I enjoyed the educational part of the workcamp too. We were taught of the manifolds ravages of the animal industry that humans contribute to when eating meat such as animal cruelty, greenhouse gas emission, deforestation. We were shown a documentary on the matter, narrated by Sir Paul McCartney (of which I can’t remember the name unfortunately) that had very graphic footage of animal cruelty. I tent to shy away from such images in general but I must admit it is a very efficient way of conveying the idea. It worked for me and it has thankfully helped to change my diet.
It was a pleasure to spend the workcamp with the family and the other volunteers, who to my understanding were at different levels on the veganism scale. Hearing their stories helped to mature my opinion on the matter, for the better, or so I hope.
A special thanks to Werner, Monika and Olivier and finally SCI for making this experience so agreeable and instructive.
