Here you will find some Workcamps taking place in neighbouring countries this summer. Take part in a local project abroad and contribute to social justice, peace and society!

ITALY – Art beyond the walls [10 – 20 Jun 2022] 

Description: The camp is organised with the Director of the prison of Gorgona, where SCI made camps in the 90s. The prison is located on an island 37 km from Livorno. It is an open type workhouse, unique in Italy, inhabited exclusively by about 80 inmates, all men annad adults, Italians and foreigners, engaged in agricultural work and with animals and 30 prison workers.

Type of Work: Volunteers will work together with inmates mainly on the remaking of a mural painting created in the 1994 SCI camp, located in the village of the island, outside the detention area and on a new mural with the inscription of Article 27 of the Italian Constitution (defense of unhuman treatment in prison). Animation activities with the inmates. 

BELGIUM – «Quartiers Libres » – Access to culture for everyone! [28 Jun –  11 Jul 2022]

Description: “Quartiers Libres” consists in a series of cultural activities and events organized by the City of Charleroi and the Cultural Centre of Charleroi “Eden” during 2 weekends. Artists and entertainers will take over public parks and working-class neighbourhoods in order to propose cultural activities accessible to all, young and old!

Type of Work: The volunteers will help with setting up and dismantling during the events, transporting material, entertaining during recreational activities, greeting the public, cleaning the site, etc.

GERMANY – Live Big in a Tiny House (Schluchsee near Freiburg) [3 –  22 Jul 2022]

Description: Build a Tiny House together with other volunteers and learn more about minimalistic lifestyles. This workcamp takes place directly at the Schluchsee surrounded by the beautiful landscape of the Black Forest.

Type of Work: With the help of experts, the house walls are manufactured and erected, windows and doors are installed and the roof structure is mounted. The wooden post-and-beam walls are insulated and clad with wood on the inside and outside. Inside, a gallery and a partition wall for the small planned bathroom are being built. Electricity and water supply as well as the installation of a wood heating system are also part of the work camp.

CATALONIA (Spain) – Labyrinth in the Rovira Nova workcamp [18 – 28 Jul 2022]

Description: La Rovira Nova is a farmhouse where a family has lived since 2015 with a few years of restoration of the house. In 2016, the Arc Hall project was inaugurated, a multipurpose space open to generate beautiful activities. Two years later, a dining room with a capacity for 25 people is built.

Type of Work: The main task of the workcamp is to constuct a labyrinth of meditation in the location.Other activities that can be done are talks, debates, outings and visits of interest to the topic.

FRANCE – Renovation of a chapel in Alsace near Germany and Switzerland [21 Aug – 03 Sep 2022]

Description: Created in 1999, the Maison de la Nature of Sundgau is an initiation center for nature and environment. Its goal is to make people discover nature and to raise awareness of respect for the environment. For the 10th project, they are joining forces with the town of Ueberstrass, which wants to restore a 15th century chapel to make it a living space for local people.

Type of Work: The volunteers will be trained and supervised by a specialist craftswoman. Your task will be to restore a wall in a traditional way, to work on other heritage places in the region, to organize an event in order to show the work carried out to the inhabitants.

POLAND – Art of living (Monar Wyszków, near Warsaw) [15 – 28 Aug 2022]

Description: Monar is the largest Polish NGO helping mainly people with drug addictions. Monar runs 30 rehabilitation centers in different parts of Poland. The center in Wyszków is situated 50 km from Warsaw in a small, quiet town, next to the river, among fields and forests.

Type of Work: The main task of volunteers is to socialize with the community by helping them in their everyday work (gardening, cleaning, working in the kitchen, renovating, taking care of animals etc.) and taking part in leisure time activities with them. Games, camp-fires, sport activities, workshops with/for the residents will bring fresh energy and relaxation to the center.

AUSTRIA – Nature Across Borders [04 – 18 Sep 2022]

Description: The local partners, National Parks Thayatal and Podyjí oversee the protection and ecological development of their respective regions, with their particular biodiversity. Some areas in Thayatal and Podyjí need ongoing management to form sustainable habitats for rare species.

Type of Work: We will remove invasive plants to prevent irreversible anthropogenic effects on the ecosystem. Secondly, we will mow or rake dry grassland areas and selectively remove bushes and small trees to prevent the forest from overgrowing these species-rich open habitats.
