About the Wikipedia 4 Peace Project
Wikipedia for Peace is a long-term project aimed at contributing more and better peace-related content to Wikipedia. It has been organised by Service Civil International and Wikimedia since 2015. The trainings combine an on-site training week in Switzerland with multiple online editing sessions. They bring together participants from different countries and with a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
Wikipedia for Peace combines non-formal education, the exchange of international perspectives, and editorial and writing training.
Project Goals
-Wikipedia for Peace projects design and prepare volunteer editing programs that advocate for urgent topics and respond to current events and pressing social matters. The project particularly engages marginalized and underrepresented groups such as youth, asylum-seeking people, refugees and queer people. It provides a safer space to express one’s opinions, engage in debate and learn about new perspectives and methods through a non-formal learning approach.
Why work on Wikipedia?
Wikipedia needs more and better content on social movements, justice and peace in general – and it needs more people who are active in the Wikiverse-movement to contribute.
Education
Access to information and education is key to public participation. Through the work on Wikipedia we enhance the commonly shared knowledge base.
Advocacy
Wikipedia offers the opportunity to highlight under-represented groups, narratives and perspectives. We encourage under-represented groups to get involved and add their stories to Wikipedia.
Key Objectives
Equip young activists to reflect on and share their knowledge and views.
Build a community that helps to fight fake news and misinformation online.
Enhance and enlarge the commonly shared knowledge base in the Wikiverse.
Enhance the participation of underrepresented groups on Wikipedia
Build networks between young activists, NGOs, and stakeholders to share resources and best practices.
Our Trainers
Thomas (he / they)
Trainer
Thomas is a peace activist based in Berlin. He has been active in SCI since 2011 and has organised and coordinated many volunteering projects and trainings. He is a co-founder of the educational collectives Critical Queer Solidarity and Education for Utopic Change. Thomas has worked as a campaign strategist for an NGO in Germany and has been involved in political campaigning for more than ten years. His focuses are global justice, anti-discrimination and anti-militarism.
Bogumiła (she/her)
Trainer
Bogumiła is a facilitator and youth leader. She has been actively involved in SCI since 2014, and now is an Jeden Świat-SCI Poland board member. She has coordinated volunteering camps and participated in a year-long project with SCI Catalunya. Bogumiła is an active member of the local community where she lives. She organises community meetings and cooperates with a local cultural centre. She’s into non-formal education methods, youth advocacy and human rights.

A peace project
16.–25. March 2018, Mont Soleil
For ten days, 12 people from around the world came together to write and edit Wikipedia content about topics related to peace, social justice and the Earth’s climate.

Project results
More than 280 people have participated in the Wikipedia for Peace camps since 2015 and more than 1,325 articles have been written, improved and translated.
