IMPACT

Our Impact

Since over 100 years Service Civil International Switzerland (SCI) organises volunteer projects around the world with the aim of promoting peace in the broadest sense: from social justice to sustainable development, and from equality to solidarity and non-violence. Over time, we have increasingly invested in non-formal education, recognizing it as a transformative tool with lasting impact on both individual and societal levels. We also assume social responsibility by actively engaging in key peace policy debates, positioning ourselves within a tradition that is peace-oriented, anti-militaristic, and committed to international solidarity.

How it works

Our main goal is to bring people from different countries and backgrounds together so that they can learn, live and work alongside one another while collaborating with local partners, initiatives and activists. This enables participants and volunteers to:

  • break down prejudices;
  • learn to cooperate;
  • make a direct impact on the project they are working on;
  • carry these values back to their communities.

That is the essence of our work and our dedication!

Our work thus has a positive impact not only on the thousands of volunteers we have placed and supported so far, but also strengthens local communities, protects ecosystems and contributes to public debate.

Die Vision und Werte von SCI Schweiz setzen sich durch Freiwilligenarbeit auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene für den weltweiten Frieden ein.

Our contribution to the SDGs

 By bringing people together across borders, SCI Switzerland fosters mutual understanding and contributes to a fairer, more peaceful and more sustainable world. In this way, it supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Its work focuses in particular on SDGs 4 (Quality Education), 5 (Gender Equality), 13 (Climate Action), 16 (Peace) and 17 (Partnerships). The SDGs are promoted through non-formal education, the empowerment of activists, environmental projects and collaboration with local and international partners.

TESTIMONIALS

This was my very first volunteer camp experience, and I am so happy to have discovered SCI– the organisation allows me to do something useful for our planet, together with other people from all over the world. […] I will always cherish this experience, and I recommend everyone to have a similar experience at least once in their life.

Gabriela Long-Term Vounteer in Ireland

In the end, everyone found their place – it was during the final performance, right in the middle of the stage. That’s when the sparkle in the children’s eyes spread to the audience. And if there’s one thing I’d like to preserve, it’s that.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be part of this amazing programme and magnificent community. After so much stress and trouble in my life over the years, I felt like a young soul again during these two weeks and like I belonged there. This was an unforgettable experience for me.
Asylum seeking volunteer camp participant from Switzerland

Working together on this project united us toward a common goal. […] More parents are now enrolling their children in school because they know there’s a proper toilet facility. Volunteers made this project a reality, and their passion inspires us to keep contributing to social change.

International Impact

Service Civil International (SCI) is an international voluntary service organisation established in 1920 and our umbrella organiation. It consists of 40 branches and groups in every continent and of more than 90 partners all around the world.

“Impact” for SCI International is our contribution to a world characterised by peace, social justice, and sustainable development. When we talk about “peace” in SCI, we refer to the concept of positive peace, where different levels contribute to the attainment of true peace.

SCI International measures impact on three levels:

  1. Participants
    It focuses on areas of personal growth such as inner peace, peace with others, and peace with nature. Indicators include self-awareness, self-esteem, inclusivity and environmental consciousness.
  2. Communities
    It evaluates SCI’s impact within local communities, measuring cultural understanding, participation and community perception of SCI’s work.
  3.  Environment
    It analyses SCI’s environmental footprint, particularly in terms of CO₂ emissions and broader sustainability efforts.
