About the project
Every summer SCI Switzerland hosts volunteer camps, which take place all around Switzerland. „Create a Common Understanding“ is a project for refugees and asylum seeking persons, as we want to invite them in those projects to create an open space for intercultural exchange with volunteers from all around the world and to offer a refreshing change from daily life in the reception centres.
What is a Volunteer Camp?
Volunteer camps are short-term voluntary projects which host an international group of volunteers, coming from all around the world. Together, the group supports different social, ecological or cultural projects in Switzerland. The projects last for 1-2 weeks and usually take place over the summer.
Who can participate?
This is a project for refugees and asylum seeking persons who are:
- 18+
- Willing to take active part in the whole duration of the volunteer camp
- Have an interest in intercultural exchange and learning from diversity
- Can communicate in the required language of the volunteer camp of their choice (normally English)
Which projects can you take part in?
There are different social, ecological and cultural volunteer camps in Switzerland. Please get in touch with us and we will let you know about the concrete volunteer camps happening this summer.
Which costs are covered by SCI?
- participation fee
- food and acommodation during the project
- travel costs to and from the project and trainings
- eventually a contribution to materials if needed for the volunteer camp

Local projects
Are you back from your volunteer camp or long-term engagement and want to stay active in Switzerland? Or do you want to put SCI values into practice at the local level?
As a local volunteer, you can participate in our events, project groups, in certain roles or in international SCI campaigns.
Find your Volunteer Camp!
Volunteer camps are short-term volunteer placements in an international group. The duration is 1-3 weeks. Together with volunteers from different countries, you support a social, ecological or cultural project abroad (in more than 90 countries) or in Switzerland. Together with other volunteers you help and discover the culture of your host country. Through your commitment, you get to know new people and can gain first-hand experience of the culture and society of your host country. From 16/18 years.
